Glassy lineup, with the whole neighborhood out in the water!

Sunday, September 9 2012 was a spectacular Surf Day!  Hurricane Leslie gave us great surf for 5 or 6 days I believe. Yeah, Saturday was the huge glassy day in Satellite Beach with some 10 foot face sets, see the photos here from my buddy Mike Melito, but the best day (which I missed cause I was out of town, ouch),  but the day for 30 to 50 rides per person (or more), was Sunday.  It was closing out, and poor form Sunday up until 2 or 3 PM, and then conditions changed big time!  RC’s was shut down, but at 3 PM, I was at Officer’s Club watching with my buddy Mike Melito, and within 30 minutes, the form cleaned up, the winds got perfect, 3 guys were out, so Mike and I paddled out at O’Club, with some awesome head high waves and and occassional 1 to 2 foot overhead cleanup set.  I surfed 2 hours at O’club, easy paddle out, no hair wet, but it was slamming hard if you got caught inside.  I caught at least 3 each 150 yard rides at O’Club.

But then I suggested, he let’s check out Johnson Ave, and see if we have less slamming, and more waves for the taking.  So we went North, and it was one of those Classic Johnson Avenue days.  It was perfect in form, yeah a foot or two smaller on the face,  but the left’s and rights were so User-friendly, the whole neighborhood was out, so we surfed another 1 1/2 hours, and then I came in to take some pictures.

This sequence is of brother Chad, a 6-shot sequence, taken about 5:30 PM or 6 PM,  my settings on the camera were a little off, but you can still see what an epic session Chad had.  He was definitely one of the stand-outs making this epic Hurricane Leslie Johnson Avenue Sunday night session, look easy 🙂

Okay, upcoming surf,  REMINDER, with my crazy schedule, I am only posting surf reports when we have a solid ground swell in the making.  So that’s why the infrequent reports.

But we do have  a solid long period swell that will start to hit our beaches tonight (Saturday night), and should see some thigh high glass or semi-glass for Sunday morning at the Cape here.  Maybe some waist high stuff, and by later in the day, chest high at the Cape, and some Chest high in Satellite Beach.  Winds look to be offshore up until maybe 11 AM with mostly a NW wind (4 to 8 mph) turning North by 11, which still would be offshore if you stay at Lori Wilson or North of it.

Monday morning, if you surf North, Lori Wilson or the Pier, should have some chest high plus sets with semi-glass until 9 or 10 AM.  The winds should be 5 to 10 mph out of the North, so it could be fairly big and semi-glassy.

This ground swell should be with us thru Tuesday, and then we should still have a solid 3 to 4 foot wind swell with us thru Friday at least.

Make sure and get in the water early Sunday to get the perfect glass and at low tide.

Have a great weekend!

RC’S PHOTOS FIRST

In the morning, Sunday,  we should see some chest high waves here at the Cape and Shoulder high in Satellite Beach, but more on that in a minute………….

These photos are from the epic Saturday surf provided by Hurricane Leslie, and they were taken in Satellite Beach at RC’s and also at the Cocoa Beach Pier, by my friend Mike Melito.

Size seemed to range from 8 foot faces to very close to double overhead, but maybe not quite.  Conditions were glassy, and those that crave big Florida Hurricane waves in Brevard, like to head to RC’s, Hightowers,  and that’s what these lucky folks did!  I was out of town, ouch, but very lucky that my friend Mike took the time to get these incredible photos.  First RC’s and then the Pier.

Perfect glassy RC's face and bottom turn, totally makeable, a happy man no doubt :)

Sunday surf;  Chest to Shoulder high with light 5 to 10 mph East winds switching to SE, but as it stands right now, they aren’t showing much more than 10 mph, so it could be very clean in the morning.

Monday, still chest high plus, with light onshore winds

TUESDAY LOOKS TO BE THE SEMI OR POSSIBLY EPIC DAY!  Rib to Shoulder high, from the Cape to Satellite Beach, with offshore SW winds, the speed, I can’t say yet, but probably less than 10 or 12 mph.

Wednesday could be a waist to chest high day with offshore winds also.

We have been blessed 3 summers in a row for waves, and of course, the Hurricanes are that special gift, so enjoy it while it’s epic.

Friday Morning Surf Report Update 9/7/12 8:30 AM, Weekend Surf from Leslie, and Hurricane Mike’s slight interference :), Surf forecast for Cape Canaveral , Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach (September 07, 2012 posted)

What’s going on with Saturday and Sunday morning with Hurricane Leslie part two, building?.…………………Morn in a second on that;

Satellite Beach on Thursday morning, the first part of Hurricane Leslie surf, a nice head high right. Photos by Oldwaverider
Satellite Beach on Thursday morning, the first part of Hurricane Leslie surf, a nice head high right. Photos by Oldwaverider

These photos are from Satellite Beach from Thursday morning, after the glass took a turn when the winds switched to South or SSE.  It was perfect chest high to head high waves, and my buddy Mike and I, caught a number of 150 yard rides from outside, all the way in.  PPPPPPPPPPerfect surf!!!!!!!!!!   The surfer is an unknown, but this was the size on the set waves.

The swell will definitely build back up a bit by Saturday, and appears to peak Saturday after dark thru Sunday morning.  The storm has de-intensified some, meaning, the double overhead surf for Saturday night or Sunday is gone, but…………………………………. I believe we will still have some 3 foot overhead rogue sets on Saturday and Sunday.

Today is chest high to maybe some head high sets down south (from a morning visual report I got around 8 AM, and very glassy with SW winds.  The winds ought to stay offshore until Noon.

Saturday, should be shoulder to head high at daybreak and building thru the day, with 3 foot overhead rogue sets by evening and for Sunday.  Winds are SW for Saturday morning in the 5 to 8 mph range, and increasing to 10 or so by Noon.  It may stay SW until well after Noon, and then the typical switch to onshore.

Sunday, head high to 2 or 3 foot overhead on the rogue sets with SSW winds, maybe SW winds until late morning, at over 10 mph, so it won’t be as carefree as Saturday, but still should be great.

Monday, should also be overhead and have offshore winds (down south at least on the winds), but by 9 or 10, they may go onshore as the new swell from Hurricane Mike starts sweeping in.

Thursday morning Satellite Beach, September 6 2012
Thursday morning Satellite Beach, September 6 2012

Tuesday and Wednesday, should be big and overhead, but hard onshore winds.

One week of chest to overhead surf with morning glass;  when’s the last time that happened from one particular swell/storm?

Enjoy the weekend, and catch the morning epic glass.  A gift from God I call it 🙂

It wasn’t quite breaking at Johnson Ave today (Friday 8/3/2012), and I wasn’t quite ready to start work, so I took a drive down to Satellite Beach, at about 1 to 2 hours after high tide, like 10:30 to 11:30 AM, and took some surf photos of some fun looking 1 to 2.678 foot waves, fairly glassy, only 2 or 3 or 4 people out.  And a few other miscellaneous photos, …

Nice wave, 6 shot sequence, Image 1 of 6
Nice wave, 6 shot sequence, Image 1 of 6

We may have a wind swell blow in Saturday sometime to bring us some waist to chest chop until maybe Sunday or so, but it is a low period wind chop, so hard to tell if it will be rideable or not.  But, it’s a shot at something, so get excited.

Monday night, we may have a 1 to 1.5 day small ground swell to hit for the evening and for Tuesday morning, in the waist to chest high range. Sunday night and Monday night we’ll update the winds to see if Tuesday looks like it could be a really fun day, or just a day 🙂

Video of Chad and Luke surfing a semi-epic chest high plus swell in Satellite Beach on July 16,2012, Monday night 9 PM surf report update, Surf Forecast for Cape Canaveral , Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach (July 17, 2012 posted)

CHAD SURFING VIDEO, WITH LUKE FROM JACKSONVILLE

We had to drive South after checking out the end of the street.  I mean, come on, how often do we get a solid chest high plus ground swell in the summer in Florida?  🙂 , Don’t get me wrong, J-Ave looked fun, but if we were gonna film a ground swell we might as well film it a couple feet bigger on the face so………………………we headed down to Satellite Beach to my favorite break, we did paddle out late 😦

But we pulled up at 8:45 AM, offshore SW winds 5 mph, a ground swell rated at 3.5 feet at 10 seconds, and we could see plenty of chest high waves (shoulders) with quite a few shoulder high sets.

It was time for a double take,  what!!!!!!,  NO ONE OUT!  So what does any normal person do, they hurry out before the winds change.  What a great session, yeah 90% closeouts, so that just meant, you let 8 waves pass you by, and take one close-out for the insane bottom turn and kick-out, and hope the next one will give ya a 100 yard ride or more.  But, I confess, there was only a couple of those which is rare under these conditions, but the plentiful 50 to 75 yard plus rides with quick walls made for a great session and day.  I only surfed one hour, and then came in to start filming, by then the winds switched out of the South, but still had really clean semi-glass conditions.

Surf Update……….We should have some knee to waist high waves for then next few days Wed thru Friday maybe, with an offshore breeze for a couple hours.  This Low Pressure system is kind enough to linger so enjoy it while it lasts 🙂

Hope you enjoy the video, and the surfing  by Chad and Luke.

Dr John 1 to 2 foot surfing and a day at the beach on Johnson Avenue video, Sunday afternoon 1 PM surf report update, Surf Forecast for Cape Canaveral , Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach (July 15, 2012 posted)

DR JOHN SURF AND A DAY AT THE BEACH ON JOHNSON AVENUE VIDEO

SUNDAY NIGHT UPDATE FOR MONDAY MORNING!!!

Still looks like glass, nice lines, however the size I will downgrade as of 10:00 PM tonight (Sunday).  I am calling thigh to waist high glass at the Cape, and waist to rib high down South, with 4 to 7 mph SSW winds.  So it should be glassy South of Minuteman causeway, and semi-glass North of it.  But………..the winds will probably turn SW for an hour or two, which means glass for everyone, but we will see.  If it stays light SSW, it will be fun everywhere. Either way,  have fun an enjoy the Summer Swell!

Dr. John I caught a few rides, one nice 10 second plus ride, but I confess, shooting into the sun and other things I have to learn yet 🙂

I did get a collage of people in the film, a Skate-Kite Boarder, Para-Sailing, Runners, a Bi-Plane and a little bit of everything.  The smooth jazz piece to go along with it, kept me within my legal boundaries for copyright complainers 🙂

The ground swell actually just started to hit the 120 mile buoy at 11 AM this morning, so it was definitely delayed by a good 6 hours maybe.  So the surf we saw this morning, even though it showed 3.5 feet at 9 seconds on Seaweed (the 20 mile buoy is down, so it’s real hard to tell),  but my guess is it was 2 foot at 8 seconds.

I do believe that we will have solid waist to rib lines at the Cape Monday morning, and chest high or better in Satellite BeachThe winds are showing South to SSW for daybreak until 11 ish, in the 4 to 6 mph range.  I suspect that they will turn SW for an hour or two, but don’t wait until 10 AM to paddle out. High tide will be going low which is perfect around 6:10 AM, so an 8 or 9 AM paddle out should be the best time.

Tuesday appears to have some size leftovers with a slight drop, probably thigh to chest, North to South, and also offshore winds.

Get it while it Rocks!

Hope you enjoy the video, I have a lot to learn 🙂

Final Space Shuttle Launch Video w/ some surfing, Scooter, Chad, plus the 747 Piggyback ride to Smithsonian :), Saturday morning and also evening July 14th surf report update, 9:00 AM , Surf Forecast for Cape Canaveral , Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach (July 14, 2012 posted)

SATURDAY NIGHT 10:30 PM SURF UPDATE FOR SUNDAY MORNING!  The winds are supposed to lay down to around 5 mph East in the Am, instead of the 10 to 15 mph that I thought would be here, and the winds may stay light until after lunch. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Well, this looks like a ground swell, so we could have some lines with nice form and rib high waves at the Cape and chest to shoulder high maybe down South with very nice form.

The music is by the Phenomenal “Jack Johnson” , Singer, Songwriter, Musician, Surfer, Videographer, need I say more about Jack?  🙂  The track is titled “Traffic In The Sky”, and the Insane photo is by the great Photographer Malia Johnson and her husband Stu Johnson, Photographer, they both live in Fiji  and shoot the epic “Cloudbreak” and “Restaurants” surfbreaks in Tavuara, Fiji. I have them mentioned in my Links page on this site.

Coming Surf!  For 2 days running, it still appears that Monday is the potential Epic Day with chest high waves down South and maybe bigger sets, and waist high plus at the Cape (from a ground swell), with offshore winds maybe all morning. Today the swell starts rolling in slowly, peaks on Sunday with median onshore winds maybe chest high at the Cape, so Sunday at the right tides (high going low), it could be really fun!  Tuesday may also have some morning offshore winds with the size dropping off some.

When I look at the buoys tonight, I will probably do an update for Sunday and talk about the wind speeds a little more accurately.

Have a Great Weekend and Enjoy Summer Waves!  Three summers in a row we have had waves (not including Canes), so our God has been gracious 🙂

SUNNY – SURFING VIDEO

We had some 1 to 2 foot semi-clean shorebreakers, and of course, Sunny was out working his typical 50 to 100 waves session 🙂

I compiled a short video here, (my first surf video, so go easy),  and I put some light Jazz in that was available without having the music companies knockin on the door.

Beautiful summer day at the Cape, fun little waves, a big boat, lots of folks on the beach, a few babes/ladies out, and me having fun watching Sunny.

Hope you enjoy!  We plan to dive into Videos a lot more and things should also progress with the footage and editing.

Surf Report,  small rideable waves at the right tides is all for now.  We may have a few small swells this week, but they are too hard to track at this size.

TS Beryl or whatever it is, is gonna throw us some waist high waves at the Cape and Chest high bigger sets in Satellite Beach. Winds should be in the 5 to 10 mph WSW range, and turning onshore sometime around Noon to 1 PM.  Low tide is around 7:03 AM, so if you can get out at daybreak, that may be the best, else, whatever time you choose to wake 🙂

The waves today at Satellite Beach was really fun thigh to rib high with some really workable walls.  Not glassy, but not choppy either, slight onshore winds when I went out at 9 AM.

The photo I think is Sunny, in a nice head dip, almost barrel, if it’s not Sunny, then it sure looks like his style  🙂

Update at 10:20 Pm Wednesday night,  it just hit 4 feet at 12 seconds at the 120 buoy, so we may be in luck if it keeps pushing in.

Upcoming surf for Thursday morning,  a new piggyback swell, seemed to be forming a ground swell, for like 1 foot at 12 seconds as the charts show.  It hit 4 feet at 8 seconds at the 120, and was a 2.5 foot swell at 12 or 13 seconds at the 20 mile buoy, also at 8 PM.

I have seen a 1.5 foot swell at 11 seconds deliver chest high waves at Perkins this time of year.  But…………..

I give a 60 % call for some knee to thigh high sets up North here, and waist high down South in Satellite Beach.  The swell angle is 72° which isn’t to steep from the North and mostly East, so we could have some fun waves.

Mid-tide of high going low is around 8:50 AM,  and with west winds light, I don’t think it will blow it flat at all, as long as the swell does actually come all the way in 🙂
