Saturday Morning and Hurricane Gonzalo was so Epic at day break, when most of the Walls were peeling fast but makeable.  Saturday, October 18 2014 that is.  Not until 9:30 Am or so, did it be come more challenging to choose a wave 🙂  The video below is the second and probably last long one from Gonzalo.  I shot about 250 clips that day, 150 in Satellite and 100 at the Pier. (Note: the video is still uploading at YouTube and should be done by 1:30 PM or before)


Those of you that were there at our Awesome Rock Break in Satellite Beach, know who you are, and where this was shot.  Thanks for all your great surfing, and footage for me to devour!

And I would like to note, that the biggest wall/wave that came in, was caught by a young lady, and she made the most perfect drop (the wave was peeling fast, but perfect), and I may slow motion that clip by itself, to upload to Magicseaweed.com at the Satellite Beach location, where I have most of my photos and videos posted.

So I had to toss a couple barrels in here in kind of a slow motion (yeah I did take two from last video),  just to show the insides of the barrel, and this one guy with an excellent off the lip on an Epic wave in form and size.

There were quite a few 10 foot faces to show that morning, though the common sets were 6-8 foot faces.  The video is about 4 minutes long, and I did it in 1080P, cause the 720P version annoyed me, LOL 🙂

When we first got to RC’s North at 7:15-7:30, the lines were epic!  I had to earnestly look for a closeout.  After my 2 hours, yes, the closeouts began.  When I started to shoot footage;  but there were still plenty of Waves holding up still from 10 – 12 PM!

(NOTE: To see the best quality, click two of the lower right YouTube icons on the controls.  Click the gear and choose at least 720P or if u have great bandwidth go for 1080P.  Also choose the “Full Screen” icon on the far right, and then start the video over so the quality kicks in.  YouTube defaults at 360P and I can’t blame them!  Turn your volume up too for the Music)

The crowds were nill, yeah, the paddle out and the sets looked intimidating (for Florida, LOL),  but when you see perfect 6-9 foot faces , with a 10 foot face thrown in every 15 minutes or so, heading back North to Cocoa Beach and the Cape did not seem like an option 🙂

Today, we have waist to chest high plus with winds SW at 2nd light wind monitor at the base, and that was around 6 at 8:30 AM, which already changed from WNW.  Get out while you can!

Great Hurricane;  though I do hope and pray Bermuda came out okay …

Finally it hit the Ft. Pierce buoy 2.6 feet at 13 seconds.  First 13 second reading. As of 12:25 PM Update.  As I said earlier , The swell is coming in, the power swell I should say, but it maybe 4 PM till we fully feel it and see it!
(Note:  The Ft Pierce buoy is only 9 miles offshore vs our 20 mile buoy which the 13 second nor even 11 second part of the swell has not hit ours.  But now that it has hit the Ft Pierce buoy, by 1:30 or 2:30 latest, we should start to see some size and power.  Also note,  It also hit the Fernandina Beach buoy at 13 seconds like 3 different readings since 9 AM this morning.  But they don’t have the Bahamas and a Cape Island that sticks out and blocks us like we do)

It hit the 120 buoy last night at 1 AM, in the 11-14 second range.   Take a look at the 4 images below and it will make sense, well, kinda 🙂

Today, we may only see head high before dark.  But don’t be surprised if late morning Friday, we see some 2-3 foot overhead faces on the big set waves.    Remember, Hurricane Leslie in 2012 was only like 4.3 feet at 12 seconds and we had some 11 foot face wave sets)

So Friday, I believe head high to overhead will happen and with 1-3 foot overhead sets in Satellite Beach, and maybe some at the Pier.  Winds offshore till late morning, NNW to maybe NW winds.

Saturday, chest to head high with offshore winds all day.

Sunday, waist to stomach plus with offshore winds most of the day.

The first 3 images are the moving Period chart of the swell (which shows the fetch or width of the storm and it’s relative strength at each of the different colors).  The first is 9 Am this morning, then 12 Pm followed by 3 Pm.   Notice the bright Green does not fully wrap our coast at the Cape until 3 Pm.   Now this model is from 6 AM this morning.  The fourth image is the swell size at 3 Pm which just shows us the size to expect and what the power should be based on the period.   This is why we are waiting.  And maybe cause the winds are a lot stronger West out at the 120 and the 20 mile buoy, so that may be slowing it down some.  a 14 second period swell travels across sea at over 20 mph (11 second travels about 17 mph, so just interpolate 🙂

When will the Groundswell part of Hurricane Gonzalo hit our beaches?  It appears to hit Thursday morning at daybreak, but we have a windswell that may bring some waves Wednesday afternoon in the thigh to waist high range.

The second image shows a clearer path and schedule of the storm.

Thursday, Gonzalo waves will be building all day and could reach in the chest to head high by 5 PM or so.  Winds should be NW or WNW in the 8 – 12 mph range.  Could make for some incredible lip spray for the challenge of dropping in fast to beat the blindness, LOL 🙂

Friday, noon to afternoon could be the biggest size of the swell.  We could see head high to 2 foot overhead sets as you head south to Satellite Beach. With stiff NNW winds probably some NW (3 days out, is a 50% accuracy guess, based upon obsessive compulsive desires for storm tracking for Hurricanes :),   but these winds could be slowing down all afternoon to the 10 mph range abouts by 4 or 5 PM.

Saturday looks fun chest to head high and glassy.

Sunday looks a lot smaller but still rideable and glassy.

GET EXCITED FOLKS!  THIS COULD BE THE MOST ENJOYABLE SWELL OF THE YEAR 🙂

What does 4.5 feet at 16 seconds really mean?  And the swell peaks around 9-12 Wednesday at 5 feet at 15 seconds.  Well…see below my Wednesday, Thursday call to see why it could hit close to double overhead for a few hours late morning in Satellite Beach  till maybe, 1 pm Wednesday.  Leslie in 2012 a month before Sandy was 4.3 feet at 13 seconds and delivered some 11 foot faces at RC’s.

A Hurricane Sandy wave, medium wave, Oct 28 2012, photo by Mike MelitoWednesday morning, I am calling 2-3 feet overhead at the Pier, with freak sets that are bigger.  By noon, I suspect Satellite will have 3 -4 foot overhead big sets, and bigger rogue sets.  Winds should be 10 to 15 mph West.

Thursday, shoulder high to 1 foot overhead at the Pier and Satellite, with bigger sets.  NW winds until 11ish, then sideshore winds.

Friday, barely leftovers with a new swell coming in for Saturday and Sunday in the thigh to waist high range.  Waves for 5 days, yeah!

You have to consider a few things.  A swell that comes from Africa, has a chance to develop a great deal of power even when the swell size is smaller than say a Sandy which traveled from the Caribbean.  Sandy hit 18-20 feet at 17-19 seconds, but the swell could not travel far and reach the deep ocean depth that a storm from Africa can.  Sandy was freak huge due to the power of the hurricane, yeah.  And, Sandy did not closeout, hardly at all.  Eduard, the fetch of the swell (the width, and height, is much much taller than the U.S. from Florida to Canada.  Look at the Period chart.  It is so big, and so perfectly uniform like the Nov 10 2011 swell.  That swell was 6 feet at 11 seconds, but 5 feet at 15 seconds is a lot of power.  We’ll see.  I’m rambling kinda 🙂

Anyhow, Eduard could be 3 to 6 feet overhead when it hits the better spots.  It will be 1000 miles form our coast, maybe a little less, but it has generated some power.  A 15 second period has a wave traveling at you at 45 mph.  An 11 second swell, travels at you in the lineup at 33 mph.  50% difference.

When does Edouard provide the first great Surf Day?  Today marks the 3rd day that Wednesday will be big and offshore winds in the morning.  What does big mean.  The models for Hurricane Edouard show 5 feet at 15 seconds between 6 & 9 AM Wednesday morning.  Note: Hurricane Leslie, was a 4.5 feet at 13 second period swell.  Quite a bit less powerful than Edouard so far.  See the rest of Forecast below Surf photo.  At the bottom of this post is the path of Hurricane Edouard, an image from Channel 13 news Hurricane Tracking.

So what does the Forecast for Wednesday thru Saturday look like for Hurricane Edouard?

Wednesday is the peak of the swell, with 5 feet at 15 seconds most of the day.  Size 5-7 foot swell, produces 2 to 5 foot overhead waves.  West winds at 8 to 12 mph, and turns onshore by early afternoon.

Thursday swell size, 4-6 feet early, and 3-5 feet by 10 AM.  Should be overhead to 2 foot overhead plus in Satellite Beach, with offshore winds , but only for a few ours in the morning.

Friday swell size, 2-4 foot, so it should be waist to chest high and even bigger sets.  It may be offshore, but it’s still too far to confirm what direction.
