What kind of swell do we have coming Tuesday through possibly Thursday this week?
Tuesday, for the 2nd or 3rd day running, the models show 1.8 to 2 feet at 12 second period swell, which starts at about 2-3 foot waves, or 3 to 4 foot faces. It should be glassy for a couple hours Tuesday morning at daybreak till maybe 8 or so.
Wednesday through Thursday, maybe Friday show more of the same 🙂
And the swell could even look like the photo below:

Tuesday morning, for 4 or 5 days running, appears to be the big and offshore day folks 🙂 and…
Tuesday, We are looking at stomach to chest high waves, with bigger sets during the unexpected moments, haha ! Offshore winds appear to be from daybreak until noon. I’ll give you a Sunday night update on the winds, when our favorite online news source can provide that for us, in the required 48 hour window. Wednesday looks fun too, thigh to maybe waist high, and glassy, but the swell drops off fast after lunch perhaps.
The photo could be indicative of some of the set waves that we will be getting Tuesday, August 5 2013 with Tropical Storm Bertha.
The surfer is my friend Mike Melito, and is a shot of him surfing behind his Cocoa Beach home away from home, at fourth street North.

We have a very cool, unique group of Surfer friends in the neighborhood. And I felt rather obsessed to share the still images and video that I have shot the last few years of as many of us as I could.
I apologize that 3 or 4 people, I was just not around, to get as much photos or video as I could, and in some of the photos, I was forced to shoot footage directly into the Sun, which can definitely degrade the photo or footage. But with that said, I do hope y’all enjoy this, I tried to create in a way to bridge the Young and the Old 🙂

THREE YEARS IN REVIEW VIDEO of Johnson Avenue Surfers will be live on January 1st, 2014, yeah tomorrow 🙂
My apologies for not sharing any reports for the last couple of swells we have had; as Y’all know, my main focus, is to share the Awesome Talent and Efforts, of those that surf from around the Neighborhood, by catching them on Camera or Video. This may be at the end of our street, the Jetty, the Cocoa Beach Pier, Satellite Beach and anywhere in between.
It’s taken me 70 or so hours to compile this baby, so that’s why I’ve been away from sharing any updates, and we all know that Surfline, Seaweed and Ross are there for that purpose anyhow 🙂
I will post the Video sometime New Years Day or tonight if I finish in time. The Surfers present are Chad, Don, Dr. John, Sunny, Me (Oldwaverider), Chuck, Chris (Orlando), Joe (Boston), Lacey, Mike (my buddy from Lakeland), Dave (Sunny’s dad), Scooter, Ron, Tim C., Dennis (Core Surf), and Paul (Jeremy’s kin and the Emu Bird Man).
I apologize if I missed anyone, and if I did, and you know I have footage of you, let me know, and I will update the final Video. The Soundtrack part will be provided by Bob Marley, Guerilla Jazz of Hawaii (I hope) and perhaps one other artist. I tried to use the Shins, but they have the U.S. blocked from using their copyright, so the tunes may have some change if YouTube lets me know.

JOHNSON AVENUE SURF GALLERY – 2011 YEAR IN REVIEW, SORT OF (Sept thru Dec.)
SUNDAY MORNING UPDATE AT 8:30 AM; THE SMALL INCOMING SWELL WAS 3.5 FT AT 11 SECONDS AT THE 120, BUT……….it stopped coming in at 11 PM last night (Saturday night), which means about 8 or 9 hours travel time to our beaches, so it was here at maybe 8 AM, and then dropped to 2.5 ft at 10 seconds at the 120 at Midnight which is not the minimum we need for a swell to hit the beach. We need about 2.6 to 3 feet at 10 or 11 seconds to get a ground swell that is ridable here (Ross at CFL surf figured that one out). Sorry folks, no waves. Maybe a ripple for SUP’s and big long boards when the tide gets lower, but the winds turn onshore by noon. But have a great Sunday anyhow with the nice weather 🙂 Back to Friday nights update post below……..

Big, No. ……….Possibly fun and rideable, yeah 🙂 Tonight an Easterly Swell is creeping in and kicking out the steep NE swell we’ve had.
Thursday was great, waist high plus in Satellite, perfect glass, light 5 to 7 offshore winds. It was even comfortable without any suit. Yeah, I did have a rash guard on and it was 1:00 and a nice 60 degrees, so yeah that did help.
Anyhow, Saturday morn should bring some knee to rib high waves from the Cape to Satellite. Light offshore winds SW to West most of Saturday around 3 to 6 mph. I’d say, if it ain’t big enough
here at the Cape, pick your spot in Satellite at mid-tide high going low and you should have some waist high long lines somewhere.It will be 52 at daybreak, but by 9 AM sunny and 60 ° , so if you don’t want the suit to bog ya down, it will be rash guard-able.
Sunday, should be 6 to 9.5 inches bigger on the face, same air temps, offshore from the NW,
but……………………….., it will turn onshore by Noon or earlier. So if you’re gonna do Church, do it at 8, and be in the water by 9:30. May have some rib high waves down South and maybe some thigh high at the Cape.
DON’T FORGET CAPE CANAVERAL FRIDAY FEST TONIGHT! The band is “Vilifi” and they are damn good. (scuse the french). The Fest goes from 6 to 10 PM, great food, great beer, awesome local Art
talent, Vendors, and ya may meet your future companion, hey whatever !

Classic Waves today! The slideshow is a 7 shot sequence of one wave. (The full size images are below if you want to click on them for full screen size)
My old high school/surf buddy Mike came over from Lakeland and we had a great waist to shoulder/head high perfect glass surf session behind his condo at 4rth street North. It was perfect glass up until maybe 10:30-11, but when it became photo time the winds jacked up to 12 or 15 mph SSW to SW so the perfect lines and smooth glass were gone, but it was still fun and nice waist to shoulder high waves. Plenty of 100 yard plus rides were had before the winds change 🙂 !!! If you want to see the full size images , than click on them below, it is the same photos that are in the slideshow.
Thursday waves…it should get almost blown flat tonight with 15 to 20 mph offshore winds that are bringing in this cold front from the central US. Maybe thigh high waves with 15 to 20 mph NNW winds switching to N by 9ish AM. Plus 45 plus ° air temps in the morning. The incoming swell doesn’t have any fetch really since it’s coming off land instead of water, so I think we’ll just have some chop with 3 foot faces or so until late Saturday. Hit’s too hard to tell with a leaving swell and a land mass cold front blowing it away 🙂
Saturday we a small NE’ ster combining with a totally massive Easterly swell that totally combine by Sunday night. Could be some 3 to 4 foot face chop on Saturday.
Sunday, may have some waist to chest high glass (waist- Cape, chest-Satellite), with a big jump in size by evening, along with a jump in winds up to 20 mph NNE.
Monday, big NE winds over 20 mph, and 8 to probably 11 foot chop down South and maybe 5 to 8 foot chop at the Cape by Monday morning.
Big overhead chop continues thru Tuesday and Wednesday, we’ll know more as the swell approaches.

Okay, you know my obsession with huge wave video…This was the contest that Kelly Slater won (as I mentioned in a post a week ago), where Kelly skipped the J-Bay ASP event to catch the Epic 30 foot plus Fiji surf back in July at Cloudbreak, which gave him the warmup that he wanted or needed to explode at Teahupoo Billabong Pro. Some of the waves in this video have 20 foot plus overhead barrels, and some brutal looking wipeouts. Okay, my digression is over, back to Maria photos and incoming surf…
We have our incoming windswell Nor’easter rolling in, it just hit at 11 AM, 4.5 ft at 9 seconds at the 120 buoy and the 20 mile is showing 3.5 feet at 10 seconds, so we should be seeing some waist high choppy waves at the Cape and some chest high chop down South. It appears that this wind swell is gonna hang for the next 3 to 5 days, around the same size, and with onshore winds. At least we’ll have something rideable, though I’m just gonna let my wounds heal from the last two hurricanes/tropicals 🙂
The photos are from Slater Lane/4rth street North on Thursday (9/15/2011) taken by myself of my old surf buddy from Lakeland Mike. The first set is a sequence of 5 shots of a nice shoulder high right. The next is a shoulder high left of 3 shots. Really fun, epic day!
