Surf report update, Friday night for Cape Canaveral n Cocoa Beach (posted 01/21/11)

Friday nite or Saturday morning actually, 12 Am, swell chart from magicseaweed.com

I’m giving about a 20% chance of us having waves Saturday morning.   Maybe thigh to waits high if we do,  but the NE ‘ster above is pushing west to east, and even though we see some arrows coming from the east-southeast,  the area of swell is very undefined.

When you look at the moving period chart,  you can really see the inconsistency of any decent size piece of water providing a large swell area.  It goes from dark to light, but scattered all over.  The 3rd image in this post, shows the Combined Swell Breakdown chart, and you can see at 6 and 9 am that a substantial wind swell in the 4rth column is listed.

The offshore winds which probably start just after midnight,  are going to be blowing probably 10 to 15 mph out of the WNW in the Am,  and at that kind of speed, it could very easily hold a weak swell way off the shoreline.  This may create the 3rd swell in the last image below, that shows a wind swell blowing from the shoreline, out to sea.  For a look at the Cocoa Beach Surf Report page of magicseaweed.com here.

Sorry I sound kind of negative on this, but on the bright side we could have a little sun for a couple of hours from 9 to 11 before the big cloudy, 20 mph winds from the west pick up.

If something does make it to the beach, high tide is around 9:15 or so,  so either dawn patrol or 11:30 Am is the best time to head out for the tides.

Fingers crossed, but I won’t be too optimistic 🙂

From magicseaweed.com, a huge Oregon swell w up to 25' to 35' face heights, early Jan. this year, Justin Howard setting up to backdoor the peak. Some did tow in, and a couple others waited for the glass, and paddled into these waves.

Sunday morning for Brevard, is still looking like waist high waves, and 6-8 mph NW winds at daybreak, and turning N by 9 am so get out early.

The air temp should be around 55 and clear/sunny by 7:30 Am, and water temp 61 by the Port and 62 down south.  High tide is 4:30 Am so being in the water by 7:30 latest gives you the best of our tides , high going low, and the winds should be offshore till maybe 9 Am.

Waist high plus for Satellite Beach.  Hope to see you out!

This photo on the left was from a swell that hit Oregon , Nelscott Reef,  they had 25-35′ face heights, and most of the guys did tow in, but a couple of the other guys waited until the winds went perfect offshore, and then did paddle in.

I love the closeup perspective of this shot as he’s getting ready to hammer down the face.  Check out the 8 shot sequence at magicseaweed.com If only Florida had the type of ocean floor bottom to give these to us 🙂

I’ll take what we get.  Later on.

Surf report update, Friday nite for Cape Canaveral n Cocoa Beach (01/14/11)

Fun waist high swell on 12/10/10, at Hangers, taken by a friend.
Fun waist high swell on 12/10/10, at Hangers, taken by a friend.

I mentioned the other day that this Nor’easter will throw remants at us for late Saturday, but mostly Sunday morning and possibly Monday.

It should bring some nice waist high waves from South Cocoa Beach, and further south on Sunday morning.  It may touch the Cape, but the swell angle is pretty steep.

The winds as of 8 tonight are showing out of the North at 3 to 4 mph by 6 am Sunday morning and turning NNE by mid-morning.

With 3 or 4 mph winds, the North wind breaks of CCB may work, and even Satellite which even though its a South wind area, should still be good.    I believe (I’ll stick my neck out a little here :),  and say that Sunday morning for 2 or 3 hours we may have NNW or NW winds until 9 or so.   With the warming air temp from 43 Friday morn to 54 at daybreak Sunday morn, that warming land mass may cause the winds to blow offshore a couple hours.

Water temp should be 60-61,  air temp should be 60 by 9 AM.  Best time to get out is 7:30 AM,  with high tide  going low, with 3 to 4 mph N to NW offshore winds until 9 or 9:30.   Of course I’m anal – retentive !  That ain’t gonna change 🙂

We may have some sunshine too, at least in and out!  Hey, if you’re stressed out, or life is sucking for you, and you need to get some peace,  then after a morning surf session, please visit Christ Lutheran Church with Pastor Greg at 11 Am.  Casual beach shorts work fine, no ties…  Check it out here.

Have a fun Sunday early morning sesh.

Surf report update, Wednesday morning for Cape Canaveral n Cocoa Beach (01/12/11)

Nov. 2010 gave up to 60 ft. wave face heights for Oregon, South Reef and Nelscott breaks. This image was submitted as an XXL Big wave award entrant, Eric Akiskalian, on the magical shaped behemoth :)

Saturday night, maybe afternoon,  the huge Nor’easter engulfing most of the Northeast, may throw some leftovers our way.

I wish I could say we’ll get more than that, but it looks like most of the swell will be pushing west to east sending the brunt of the swell toward England.  However, the swell direction does seem to turn toward us with the strength of a small ground swell sometime Saturday late,  and possibly light , very light onshore winds for Sunday morning.

Right now it’s looking like waist to chest high waves for South Cocoa Beach  and Satellite Beach.  It looks as though the Cape may be blocked out of most of the swell, but….I won’t say that definitively. As the swell approaches further, we’ll be able to make better determinations.

In the meantime, enjoy the XXL entrant photo from November, 2010, which was Eric Akiskalian I believe, photo complements of MagicSeaweed.com here.

Surf report update for Cape Canaveral n Cocoa Beach (01/08/11)

Well, I see nothing for at least a week.   If what is see 7 or 8 days out turns in to something, we’ll let ya know.  I know some small waves come and go , but ya’ll have figured out that I just track solid swells (small or big), but at least solid.

Below is a fun session I had by myself at Hangers, back on Dec. 10 or 12, 2010.

Christmas Eve surf report update for Cape Canaveral n Cocoa Beach (12/24/10)

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

It looks like our surf remains consistent (we hope) with last nights anal retentive data check 🙂

I believe we’ll see thigh to maybe…..waist high in the Cape, and chest high plus in Satellite Beach.  The swell looks to be 3.5 feet at 11 seconds, maybe 4 feet, it’s been hanging around 7 to 8  feet at 12 seconds at the 120 buoy so we should have a pretty strong ground swell in the morning.  The winds in CB are showing 3 to 7 mph from the SSW, so with the land warming up quicker than water, we may still see some pressure generated to push those winds more like SW. (I’m optimistic anyhow)

Water temp is 60 and should hold at that for the day.   Dawn air temp is 45-48, low tide, around 7, high at 10:30 AM. The high temp for the day is around 74, sunny with partly cloudy times.

The tides not ideal, but if you paddle out at daybreak it should be awesome, but chilly,  I have a spring suit, so I’ll wait till 10 Am and hit a high tide break in South Cocoa, unless the rocks are breaking in Satellite.

Have a wonderful Christmas, and a great Christmas Day surf sesh!

Cape Canaveral surf report update, Thursday night (12/23/2010)

A Brevard County Christmas ground swell.
A Brevard County Christmas ground swell.

Friday we have a 4 to 5 foot 10-11 second period ground swell coming in. (Actually we will see some in the AM, but the full force in late afternoon).   At daybreak, The first part of the Nor’easter swell, probably North winds, at 10-15 mph turning NNE by 8 or 9 Am.  Size ought to be maybe thigh high at the Cape, with chest high plus down South. In the afternoon the winds should be strong onshore 15 plus mph NNE winds.  The winds may start to slow down by evening.  Saturday should be the glass.

Christmas morning, Saturday at daybreak,  should be glassy, thigh high waves I hope at the Cape, and chest to shoulder high waves in Satellite Beach.  We should have some SW winds 2 to 5 mph until maybe 10 am, increasing to 10 mph by noonish, turning toward the South.

The tough choice is when to paddle out.   Low tide is 4 Am, so daybreak would be mid-tide, the air temp should be 50-52 degrees (not to bad) , and WSW winds around 5 mph. The best tide will be for a noon paddle out (high tide at 10:30, high going low which is best), but by noon the winds could already be out of the South.  But maybe they’ll hang in there from the SSW.

Merry Christmas and have a great Christmas surf session!

Another fine day at Perkins, Nov - Dec 2009, taken by a friend.
Another fine day at Perkins, Nov - Dec 2009, taken by a friend.

Today was pretty awesome at Officer’s Club. I checked the pier, and it was a little small, so I went a little down south to O Club.  I paddled out 3 hours after high tide, should have got out an hour before, but it was still pretty glassy.

It was waist high with occasional bigger sets, and some really long longboard rides to be had. I took 5 really fun rides, and 30 minutes, I was pretty stoked. I had a lot to do today, so 5 great rides made the trip worth it!

Well, if you read last nites post, we had a bigger swell coming in for Wednesday morning. Now it shrunk a bit, and what scares me is the strong offshore winds tonight that may push it away from our beach.

It is a very strong period swell, but that doesn’t promise anything. If it does hit the beach. I believe the best we will see is waist high waves down south, and hopefully something big enough to ride here in the Cape.

Hey, at least, the time to get out is 10 AM (2 hrs past high tide so its high going low). This gives us, a nice sun to drench us, and 62 to 65 air temp by that time.

I believe there will be something fun and rideable.

Have a great day.

Cape Canaveral surf report update, Monday night (12/20/2010)

My signature maneuver :) Photo taken by a friend at Perkins, Nov - Dec 2009.
My signature maneuver 🙂 Photo taken by a friend at Perkins, Nov - Dec 2009.

Our four foot 9 second period swell will probably be hitting the beach in the early AM Tuesday and we could have some NNW light off-shore winds in the early daylight hours.  But it will be around 48 degrees at daybreak or colder.  The water temp is 59 degrees right now at the Port.  By Wednesday, it may be up to 60.  Hurahh……….

Then by late morning, the winds should be going NNE, and this should be bringing in our long period 13 second period Nor’easter swell in the late afternoon to early evening.  The winds probably will be onshore until after midnight Tuesday, and then Wednesday morning the swell should be 3.5 feet at 11 seconds with W winds in the daybreak hour, and switching around to NW by late afternoon, in the 8 to 12 mph range.  It should only be around 50 degrees at daybreak Wednesday, but if you wait till High tide going low, (wait till 10, which is 2 hours after high), then the temp ought to be above 60 degrees and sunny, ah yes, sunny.

Wednesday morning, this should bring us some thigh to waist high waves at the Cape, and some chest to shoulder high waves in Satellite Beach with some respectable power.

The shape of the swell, as far as close-outs a bunch, or great shoulders, is a tough call right now, since the swell won’t be that big, and with little time to form, so I would say check out a few breaks, and just choose the one with the least close-outs.  Hah, kind of a no-brainer eh?

The cool thing is, that even though the swell drops off a little during the day Wednesday, with offshore winds, it may pickup just a little in size Thursday AM which may also have some offshore winds for us too.

Wednesday morning, high tide is 8:09 AM for the Cape, so you can let it warm up a bit, and paddle out at 10 Am, with High going Low, and have a great session.

Christmas Eve looks like a new swell coming in, in the morning, and with possible strong off-shore winds on Christmas Day.

Hope to see ya out there!

Cape Canaveral surf report update, Thursday night (12/09/10)

Another chilly November - December day at Perkins, 2009 by a photographer friend of mine.
Another chilly November - December day at Perkins, 2009 by a photographer friend of mine.

We have a 4.5 foot at 15 second period swell that should be fully here by noon Friday,  but most of the swell ought to be here in Cape Canaveral some time tonight after midnight.

If the Cape isn’t blocked out to bad we should see some thigh to waist high waves (the swell is from the ENE) , and perhaps chest high plus down south in Satellite Beach.  The winds may be NNW from 8 to 11 mph in the morning, both in the Cape and Cocoa Beach.

It should only be 50 plus degrees at daybreak, and rising fast but it’s a trade off between cool temp with low tide and NNW winds at dawn patrol or waiting till high going low (high tide around 10:45 AM), so 11:30 Am, but winds switching out of the North but 65 degrees 🙂

I believe I’ll do dawn patrol, if there’s no morning sickness in the water, maybe the pier or one of the North wind breaks on this side of Minuteman Cswy.   Keep in mind, that the huge Nor’easter on Nov. 14th was supposed to have NNW winds which isn’t a good call for the Satellite Beach rock/reef breaks, but they turned out to have the most epic surf.  See the pics here: https://j-avenue-surfers.com/2010/11/14/cape-canaveral-huge-noreaster-surf-update-report-observation-111410/

Saturday should have some good leftovers, and Sunday we’ll just have to wait and say how strong and big the swell is.

Suit up, and enjoy the swell , cool weather, and maybe we’ll have some shoulders lining up for us!
