Perkins, Hightowers and RC’s all had the perfect wind and a great exiting ground swell that delivered some hollow barrels and long makeable chest to head high lines on Friday.   Unfortunately, up North at the Cape, the swell just didn’t cooperate 😉

I didn’t get to take many pictures Friday, cause I just shot them quickly before I surfed, so I used up the only head high wave shots in yesterday’s post.  These shots are mostly chest high.

What’s up with surf?  I’m sure you guessed a no brainer.  Sunday, look for double overhead powerful ground swell chop in Satellite Beach and the Cape it’s impossible to call since the swell angle is so sharp, it’s hard to say how much we’ll get.  This morning by 10 Am, I would have thought I’d see at least chest high waves coming in at the Cape, but it was just leftovers from the leaving ground swell on Friday.

Monday thru Wednesday, it still looks like big overhead chop, but Wednesday morning may have a chance of North winds, which is slight offshore for the Cape.

Thursday is still shaping up for overhead and glassy in Satellite Beach and by then perhaps chest high and glassy at the Cape.  By Tuesday, we’ll have a handle on the swell entrance and wind for Wednesday and Thursday at the Cape.

Close to Epic surf today!  Unfortunately, something was happening that hammered the form of the Waves here at the Cape, but Satellite Beach was crankin!

It was consistently chest to shoulder high waves, with an occasional 1 foot plus overhead set that rolled through, but not many.  I saw a few 2 foot overhead drops on shorter people 🙂 j.k.

Image 2 of 3 in the set. Shoulder to Head High left behind Perkins.
Image 2 of 3 in the set. Shoulder to Head High left behind Perkins.

Anyhow, the lefts were totally hollow, and many 100 yard rides were available.  The rights weren’t as hollow, but 100 yard rides were just as plenty.  Probably 50-60% were closeouts so ya just let em roll by, and they were pretty predictable,  so other than the fact that you had to wait a while for long period swell set waves to roll up, it was pretty awesome.  We’ll know by tommorrow if the totally hollow chest high shore break right that I couldn’t resist riding all the way in,  whether or not it did crack a rib or just bruise it; but heh, its been 13 months since I cracked a rib on shore break, so I guess I was due 😦

Image 3 of 3 in set.
Image 3 of 3 in set.

The pics I took at Hightowers I zoomed in too much, but the set I took at Perkins, was zoomed way out, so , it was just of those days 🙂

Saturday surf; this massive NE swell has such a sharp angle (like 52 ° which could completely block us out until Sunday,  a 90° swell means it comes straight from the East, so 52 ° with the KSC property sticking way out could block all the size unless you do the Pier.  And even then, you may have to drive 4 miles South)  Anyhow head high down South and then bigger after noon, up North here, we’ll have the best

Well it looked like a sweet, Head High right..........not ;) Image 1 of 3 in set. Hightowers break, Nov. 4rth Friday. Photo by oldwaverider

winds for surf, they should be  NNW winds till 7 Am and then go North, but maybe…they maybe will keep a little NNW for another hour, like maybe till 9 Am.  Mostly North winds from daybreak on, in the 15 mph range until 10 or so, and then it starts kicking up over 20 mph.

Barrel ? Image 2 of 3 in set. Hightowers.
Barrel ? Image 2 of 3 in set. Hightowers.

Sunday,  there will be some 12 foot plus faces in Satellite Beach with 20 to 25 mph NE winds.  So, if you wait till exact high tide, and paddle out up North, you may find some head high to two foot overhead chop with some shoulders to play around on.

For now, the first window for offshore winds is showing Thursday November 10th, head high stuff, maybe better, but when it gets closer we’ll tighten up on the wind forecast.

The water was 1 degree warmer then up North anyhow :) Image 3 of 3 in set.

I hope ya enjoy the pics from today at Hightowers, and maybe you got lucky and surfed 2nd light or better yet, RC’s.

Saturday or Sunday I’ll throw some more pics from today.

Enjoy the Friday Fest street party and the Air Show!

Wednesday morning 10 Am Surf Report for Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach, Friday still looking potentially epic, Andy Irons 1 year video, Saturday close to epic, Sunday potential for glass up North and pushing …almost double overhead, Billabong XXL Awards 2012 mid-year highlights video, Cape Canaveral Friday Fest November 4rth, Still looking at Overhead Waves for the Next Week likely, Surf Forecast for Cape Canaveral n Cocoa Beach (posted Wednesday November 02, 2011)

I try to keep the Titles of my posts brief and to the point…;)

What can I say?  A lot of stuff going on, such as my OBSESSION WITH BIG WAVE VIDEOS, when YouTube and/or Magicseaweed.com release the Mid-Year highlites for the Billabong XXL Awards (2012 now) I gotta put that one on the front 🙂

Surf report update in a minute…

In case y’all don’t get to keep up with the contests on the regular normal wave ASP tour,  or keep up with the XXL Big Wave tour, this has been a record year for the world’s great big wave surf breaks.  Teahupoo (of whom our local legend Kelly Slater won the ASP event),  and the fact that he skipped the J-Bay event offering 6 foot waves in order to catch some 30 to 40 foot plus tow in surf at Fiji for the epic 50 year storm, 49 foot swell on the charts,  that swept into the Tasman Sea.   That storm hammered  Australia, and brought the most incredible waves to Cloudbreak, Restaurants  and Tavarua Fiji.

As I mentioned in previous posts,  Kelly skipped the J-Bay event and got the best warm up session in Fiju that probably gave him more confidence to nail it at the Teahupoo ASP event where they had to shut down the event, and let the tow in guys have fun, until the waves hit a normal 10 to 15 foot for the regular contest event.  (not like he really needed confidence, but surfing Teahupoo  takes more character than any other surf break on the planet, not diminishing Mavericks in any way 🙂

Okay, the long wind ceases, surf in Brevard………………….

Today (Wednesday)a foot or so overhead in Satellite Beach and chest high plus at the Cape. (probably a few head high sets here at the Cape).  The winds should be in the 10 to 15 mph NE direction, so right at dead high tide (around 2 PM),  you can catch the easiest paddle out,  the cleanest time of day for the faces,  the best shoulders while it is high tide.

Thursday, probably a foot bigger down South maybe some 2 foot overhead waves, and with a lot more power because the ground swell rolls in after midnight Wednesday night/Thursday morning.  We ought to see some head high waves at the Cape, and the winds ought to be mild onshore, like 5 to 6 mph NE all day.   So it could be real fun Thursday.

Friday, still looks like the epic day!  Head high to maybe a foot or so overhead in Satellite Beach and solid chest high plus at the Cape.  The swell does drop off a bit late Friday but not much. If the wind models hold out, it looks to be 4 to 6 mph offshore winds out of the West to SW.  Yowwwwwwww!!!

Saturday,  a new swell piggybacks the departing Friday swell with strong North to NNW winds, probably 15 to 25 mph.  but it could be head high and semi-glass up North in the morning, and by dinner time, we may be seeing some 8 to 10 foot faces down South.

Sunday morning ought to have some large sets come in with 8 foot faces at the Cape, and probably some 10 foot plus faces down South.  But the winds (as a guess out of the 48 hour window),  are looking to be NNW and over 20 mph, but it could be really sweet at the Pier and the Jetties.

I don’t see any drop in swells for a week out,  so eat well, bring a rash guard at least for Friday morning, because it may be around 62 to 64 degrees in the morning, not cold, but with the water temp lingering only about 2 degrees above spring water temps, it may be a little chilly.

Get excited, and don’t forget about the Cape Canaveral Friday Fest Street Party.  Here is their info below:

The next Friday Fest is scheduled for November 4th from 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm. Activities will include a variety of food vendors, an assortment of novelty & craft vendors, children’s activities including bounce houses, a giant slide & games, live entertainment along with beer & wine.

Live entertainment will feature “Entasy” on Taylor Avenue & “Lonnie & Delinda” on Poinsetta Avenue.

The fun will take place on Taylor Avenue & Poinsetta Avenue.

I do need to add one more  video link here.  Andy Irons, one year has passed.  I could quote some of what they say, but just check it out here.

The 5 to 7 day ENE swell coupled with Hurricane Philippe is rolling in slowly and may increase a little in size for Friday, but Saturday morning is when the size gets huge and the power starts rolling in.  (huge for Florida standards :)……….

But, before I wail into the incoming swell…about the photos;

The photos here I took at O ‘ Club on September 8,  the 2nd big day of Hurricane Katia.  As you heard me mention in a couple of other posts.  My buddy Ken and I first paddled out around 8 AM, and it was a solid 3 to 4 foot overhead with some bigger rogue sets.  But by 12 or so,  the Hurricane was dropping and the size had dropped to head high with occasional overhead waves, but were still nice and glassy and powerful.  We were surfing at the 2nd light border of Officers Club break, and the photos in today’s post, were of a guy actually in the North end of 2nd light.  The zoom was on full, and the surf was still 250 yards out.

MY APOLOGIES FOR USING THE LEVELS FILTER SO INTENSE ON THE FIRST PHOTO.  It was so faded looking I had to jack up the contrast quick.  Plus, the washout effect on the other photos is a little heavy also.      L.M.A.O at my own Anal-OCD ishness.  It’s late and I’m fried;)

Friday, probably shoulder high at the Cape and Overhead in Satellite.  Winds looking to be ENE to NE, 15 to 20 plus increasing past 15 by mid-morning.

Saturday could hit double overhead chop down South, so I imagine we’ll have some extra visitors that want to make it in 2 foot overhead wind chop up here 🙂    Plus the winds ought to be 20 to 25 mph ENE at daybreak and increasing thru the day.  But, at dead High tide,  there might be some fun short-board peaks,  and some long, continual reforming longboard waves.

Same guy, I had to make a little camera adjustment. A rookie :) Image 4 of 6 sequence.
Same guy, I had to make a little camera adjustment. A rookie 🙂 Image 4 of 6 sequence.

Sunday  I’ll go with similar to Saturday.

Monday morning at daybreak, but this is iffy and the models for big storm winds can change every 6 hours, but I’ll say it anyhow; could be double overhead , glassy, with 15 mph plus offshore  winds,  with the size dropping to 3 foot overhead by 9 or 10 AM, winds staying the same.  Size looks to drop to a 1 to 2 feet overhead by dark.  Also, Saturday thru Monday we’re looking at a swell period in the 10 to 11 second range, dropping to 9 on Tuesday, so the power of the swell could be rockin !

Keep your stoke up,  know that models change, but what I get high about from models, is hoping that they play out.

Don’t forget the Cape Canaveral Friday Fest!

Have a fun and little bit wet weekend.

CHAD PHOTO GALLERY, but first our Surf update…

QUICK SATURDAY 2 PM AFTERNOON UPDATE,  Sunday is still showing NNW winds in the 10 mph range in the morning until noonish, so up North is the place to be.   Okay, back to Friday afternoons report below…

Hurricane Ophelia a Category 3 Hurricane is projected to start moving Northward tonight, which is why we have more groundswell waves coming in Saturday night/Sunday morning.

(A Cat 3 cane only 1100 miles out would normally throw much stronger waves our way, Ex. Hurricane Florence in 2006 a Cat 1 threw double to almost triple overhead waves between Playalinda and Satellite Beach, which was 950 miles offshore.  Hurricane Bill in 2009 a Category 2, about 900 miles away through triple overhead waves to Daytona and double overhead here in certain spots,  but I believe Ophelia having lost its lateral push after falling apart, may only be giving us some breadcrumbs 🙂

Chad, image 2 of 6 shot sequence, Tropical Storm Maria Day One at Johnson, photo by Oldwaverider
Chad, image 2 of 6 shot sequence, Tropical Storm Maria Day One at Johnson, photo by Oldwaverider

Saturday night the ground swell rolls in with some pretty substantial onshore winds…but, Sunday morning at daybreak,  size should be stomach to shoulder high depending on your spot.   The winds at the Cape look to be offshore around 10 mph NNW (based on the models of Ophelia moving North again), so that should be a no brainer as to where the best place to surf would be based on winds.  Sunday should be fun, granted NNW at 10, don’t necessarily mean mirror glass, but it does mean glass for the Cape 🙂

Chad, image 3 of 6 shot sequence, Tropical Storm Maria

The winds could hold Sunday until Noon or 1 PM,  so you can still thank God and surf in the same morning;  however you choose to do that is your call 😉

Chad, image 4 of 6 shot sequence, Tropical Storm Maria
Chad, image 4 of 6 shot sequence, Tropical Storm Maria

Okay, Monday, still looks like decreasing size with strong onshore slop, but we won’t know for sure until Saturday morning. (we can only call winds 48 hours or less before the surf time )

Tuesday looks like another swell Correction:  A Nor’easter not Philippe starts rolling in bringing those huge waves you see on the charts,  ENE (Tropical Storm Philippe starts rolling in from the ESE and by Wednesday mid-day it gets big with big onshore winds.  It looks like Thursday the big gets bigger with a few feet overhead in size with 15 to 25 mph ENE winds, depending on surfing South or at the Cape maybe shoulder high.

THIS IS THE FRIDAY MORNING UPDATE FOR LAST NIGHTS THURSDAY NIGHT FORECAST…(10:30 Am Friday morning, 9/30/11)

Saturday night a new ground swell rolls in with some pretty substantial onshore winds…but, Sunday morning at daybreak,  size should be stomach to shoulder high depending on your spot.   The winds at the Cape look to be offshore around 10 mph NNW, so that should be a no brainer as to where the best place to surf would be based on winds.  Sunday should be fun, granted NNW at 10, don’t necessarily mean mirror glass, but it does mean glass for the Cape 🙂

Okay, Monday, still looks like decreasing size with strong onshore slop, but we won’t know for sure until Saturday morning. (we can only call winds 48 hours or less before the surf time )

Tuesday looks like another swell starts rolling in from the E and slight NE and by Wednesday mid-day it gets big with big onshore winds.  It looks like Thursday the big gets bigger with a few feet overhead in size with 15 to 25 mph ENE winds, depending on surfing South or at the Cape maybe shoulder high.

No indication on any offshore wind day for that yet, but since it is a windswell and not a ground swell, it may only be a 3 to 6 hour window of offshore winds for that swell.

I am going to copy and paste this forecast into one later today, that will include a photo gallery of brother Chad from Day one of Maria here at the Cape.

Until later today,  have a nice few hours 🙂

We have a Southeast swell coming in Saturday night and Sunday morning, bringing strong onshore winds with no visible sign of the winds turning offshore.  It just kind of goes from an incoming ground swell to a lingering windswell (go figure ;).

Sunday should have some size to it, ranging from waist to chest high plus depending on where you surf, but it will be strong onshore winds only.

By Monday the size weakens and then starts to increase Tuesday thru Wednesday, still with strong onshore winds, and with a very low swell period.  So for Tuesday thru Thursday, don’t expect long lines.

Funny thing is, we will still have waves that are rideable, it’s just I am spoiled from all these epic Hurricane Waves with offshore winds.   But I don’t see a dryspell for waves by any means 🙂

A week out, it also looks like another big swell will be coming in, more on that in a day or two.

I will be posting some photo galleries in the next few days,  I’ve been swamped workwise, so my apologies for not getting them up sooner.

Have a great Friday 🙂

Katia will have some waves for us in the morning.  They kind of sent something our way a few hours ago, but the real strength won’t start till the morning.  (Monday morning) Sea Lice are pretty bad again, so get out and buy and try SeaSafe Jellyfish and Sea Lice repellent.  Supposedly it works for before the fact, not after.  See photo of Lice below.

Sea Lice photo, blown up 1000 percent, I believe
Sea Lice photo, blown up 1000 percent, I believe

Monday should have some chest high waves for us and growing thru the day.  The angle of the swell, it’s hard to tell how it will come in for the Cape until another day or so, but I think we’ll see chest high down south for sure, and by the end of the day, chest at the Cape and bigger down south.   South winds from 8 to 15 mph with maybe stronger gusts.

Tuesday, a little bigger, shoulder high and growing, South winds also, but maybe a few hours of SSW winds.  Need I say,  South winds mean first Playalinda (32 degrees offshore) , 2nd Spanish House/Sebastian Inlet (26 degrees offshore).  Definitely, go south of Minuteman Causeway for your best chase for semi-glass or minimal chop.

Wednesday, we should have some overhead waves, probably head high to slight overhead at the Cape, and a couple feet overhead down southSW winds for a few hours in the morning, so get out early.  (though the winds call is iffy, until I check them out Monday night or Tuesday morning for a 75 to 80 % accuracy call for Wednesday morning.

Thursday chest high to overhead as the models look with possible NW winds the first few hours in the morning.

Friday, strangely enough the size looks to increase a foot over Thursday with WNW winds possible in the morning.

Beyond Friday is getting real iffy to try and call.   It is not confirmed that that is a true sea lice photo above, perhaps someone can let me know.

Monday is the last day of the NKF 26th Annual Surf Festival, so get down there and check it out, with the additional thrust in waves from Katia.

The photo above is my buddy from Newport Beach Rob’s friend Clay surfing a classic day at Punta Mango , El Salvador a couple years ago.

Get pumped for Wednesday thru Friday.

Hurricane Katia for when our surf gets great.
Hurricane Katia for when our surf gets great.

Katia getting close enough to start “guessing” the big and glassy days 🙂    Well, almost…

Our local windswell that will be coming in late Saturday afternoon will start bringing surfable waves for today and Sunday.  Onshore, thigh to waist high plus stuff with onshore winds depending on the Cape or toward Patrick and Satellite Beach.

Monday and Tuesday, for 2 days running now show South winds as the Cane starts sending us chest high waves Monday on up to overhead waves by Tuesday, so this is Playalinda and Spanish House type wind.  Offshore in both places.  If you don’t want to drive, then surf anywhere south of 6th Street South and at least it will be 3 to 6 degrees offshore with direct South winds.  RC’s and Hightowers it would be around 10 degrees offshore, and by the way, right now its only showing around 10 to 12 mph South winds so it could be really fun Monday and Tuesday.

Saturday 6 AM swell model update from Magicseaweed.com
Saturday 6 AM swell model update from Magicseaweed.com

WINDS ARE ALWAYS IFFY,  AND THE BEST I CAN CALL ARE WINDS 36 TO 48 HOURS OUT ONLY.  KEEP THAT IN MIND FOR TUESDAY ON, REGARDING THIS REPORT UPDATE !.

Wednesday morning, right now appears to be the biggest day, models of wind are too far out,  but it looks to be SW winds and overhead waves, so down South could be epic.  If you surf up North, with SSW to SW,  you’ll be getting slight onshore to sideshore winds with a very slight offshore, but it wouldn’t be glassy.

Thursday morning, SSW to SW in the morning, head high, glassy down South and by late late afternoon, the winds start turning West so up North should be great by then.

Friday morning looks to be chest to head high an glassy everywhere.

The swell chart here even though it was placed in the style that it is on my favorite data house Magicseaweed.com, these are the same numbers that we see on Surfline, SurfGuru, Wavecaster, etc.  They all get their data from NWW3 and GFS.  But,  MSW has their own programmers that bring the data with shoreline conditions, other storms affecting the storm we are tracking, and they draw interpolations from this with their own created models.   To me they are hands down the best source of raw data interpolated.  (my plug for MSW 🙂  But all the others still do a great job, and the most reliable interpretation of this stuff to give us user friendly reports over the years in my opinion is brother Ross at CFLsurf.com  .

Anyhow,  Katia swell models have  dropped but it now looks like overhead surf that everyone can paddle out and have a great session/s.

The Stormpulse.com image here shows that Katia should be around 700 miles due east of us, which is less powerful than Bill, less than Earl, but still on track to give us multiple days of great surf.

Sunday, the same wind swell, small, persists until late afternoon, when the first dribble of Cane Katia starts sending in waves.  Playalinda and Spanish House could have some nice chest high size and slight offshore winds (SSE to SE; S winds are 32 degrees offshore at Playalinda and 26 degrees at Spanish House).  2nd light to RC’s will have sideshore SSE to SE winds.

Monday and Tuesday will be growing from chest to overhead by Tuesday , right now looking onshore winds in the 15 to 20 range.

Wednesday and Thursday will be pushing the 2 to 4 foot plus overhead range, also with onshore winds, but………….Thursday and or Friday (or both days),  could be the big and offshore wind days.  So we will keep you updated on that mostly, once Tuesday and Wednesday night roll around when I can get more accurate wind data.

Oh, Katia is still a Cat 1 Hurricane, but it still shows to be a Cat 3 by Wednesday, and should be about 850 East of Daytona at that point, so if the wind sheer models hold, it should start aiming some Northward, and if the wind sheer models don’t hold,  then start packing…………just kidding, but listen close to the weather.

Here endeth the Friday , Sept. 2nd update for surf coming our way.  Below is my post from Thursday afternoon…

I just don’t know if the title of this post is quite long enough…

There’s a lot going on 😉

Katia went Hurricane Category 1 hurricane late last night or this morning.  Should be a Cat 3 by Monday, and by Tuesday it will only be 1100 miles from us, though the general consensus is that an upper wind sheer with keep it diverted off our part of the coastline anyhow.  As the general consensus goes.   Still,  like I mentioned the other day,  consider doing your Boy Scout stuff like water, canned goods, extra cat and dog food, batteries, fans and if you really wanna get anal, some water purification tablets…okay, I’m slipping into Alarmist syndrome here, my bad 🙂

Before we get into Katia and forecasts, we have some Hurricane Irene pics here from Saturday (the day after the big day 🙂  down around Slater Lane, mid-morning chest high waves, pretty much perfection.

The photos were taken by a surf buddy and high school friend Mike Melito.  (He also did my Hurricane Earl and Danielle pics last year)

It was head high down by Satellite Beach, but I couldn’t make it down there. In between in North Cocoa Beach (as shown in these pics it was still pretty sweet)  But I did surf some incredibly fun waist to stomach high waves at Johnson Ave,  so needless to say, I was happy.

Also, Ross at CFLsurf.com has an incredible array of photos from Irene at his site (Picasa Web gallery) , check him out too.

Nice waist to chest high left.

The 1st Friday of the month Friday Fest of Cape Canaveral is September 2nd, this Friday.  The band Vilifi, whom I heard before is awesome, 3 piece band with incredible guitar player, drummer and bass.  (Obviously, those would be the 3 instruments for a 3 piece band, but my point is, each musician is incredible 🙂  If the link takes long to load, then just click on Cape Canaverals city website, and go to the 7th menu link for Friday Fest.

Hard to tell if it would be a good longboard day ;) Photos by Mike Melito.

It still appears that Katia will start throwing us some waves Sunday night after dark,  with some waist to chest high waves building Monday, onshore winds.  The swell may provide some huge stuff, may last for 3 to 5 days.

The models are showing some possible offshore winds on Tuesday, which I would imagine that has to do with the storm in the Gulf which may become a cane also, heading toward Houston, cause it’s too early for Katia to be going offshore.

In Summary,  aside from a little wind swell we may have in the next couple days,  Monday starts Katia, and Tuesday it should be about 1100 miles offshore.  If it goes North with at least 600 miles off the coast we could have some killer waves by Wednesday or Thursday.

All alone...

Don’t forget to have a blast and at the same time support the 26th Annual  NKF (National Kidney Foundation)  Surf Festival, check out their site for this year here.  The event takes place at the Cocoa Beach Pier starting Thursday Sept.1st.

We’ll keep ya posted.  If you don’t have a long leash for your cat or dog, get one, and a cage, just in case.  (what’s this guy so obsessed about pets for ?)

Tropical Storm Katia on the way…….But I had to show a few more of the awesome Friday, Hurricane Irene pictures from Gulfster.com  .  Many of the pictures on their site are Satellite Beach,  The Pier, and another spot I believe.

Tropical Storm Katia appears to be sending us waves on late Sunday or Monday, as it stands now, onshore winds bringing the storm in, in the 3 to 4 foot range.   By Sunday, it looks to be about 1500 miles from us, as a Cat 2 or 3 Hurricane.

Tropical Storm Katia, headed straight our way, 60 mph winds, 20 mph. Possible hurricane by Wednesday some time. Sunday could place it about 1500 miles WSW of us. Compliments of Stormpulse.com

With the sole intention of being an alarmist,  keep in your mind, preparation for a direct hit between us and Jacksonville.  No one is saying this,  just my thoughts.  Consider looking at your Boy Scout list of Hurricane preparation items.  Okay,  here endeth the alarmist 😉   …Not!  Katrina was 6 years ago in 2005.  It’s like they’re related 🙂

We should have some more news on this puppy (Katia) by Wednesday night, or Thursday.

I’m waiting on some pics for Saturday, in the chest high range from Irene, by Slater Lane.

Oh, in case you didn’t hear it or see it in today’s Florida Today.  Kelly Slater won the Tahiti Pro in huge waves meeting in the finals against Owen Wright.

Check out the killer slideshow at Magicseaweed.com  .  He was ranked 6th, after he skipped the tour in J-Bay (looked like 6 foot waves for that contest),  and he caught the once in a lifetime swell in Fiji.  30 to 40 foot , tow in and paddle in.  The same storm that they called the 50 year storm hitting Tasmania first, then Australia (thus the 50 year storm name) and on to Fiji and other places.   That big wave surf, very similar to Teahupoo except longer rides than Teahupoo.

Don’t forget about the 26th Annual NKF Surf FestivalLabor Day Weekend – Cocoa Beach – September 1-5, 2011. Read more about the Surf Festival here.
